Sinusitis is an inflammation or swelling of the tissue lining in the sinuses. Sinuses are hollow spaces within the bones between the eyes. The inflammation cause them to blocked and filled with fluid. It is usually caused by the cold or allergies. In Ayurveda, acute sinusitis is due to aggravated kapha and vata dosha in the region above the clavicle (collar bone).

Causes for Sinusitis:

  • Swelling inside the nose like from a common cold
  • Blocked drainage ducts
  • Structural differences that narrow those ducts
  • Increased intake of dry, oily, spicy foods that are too hot or too cold, foods that are heavy and hard to digest, poor food combinations
  • Exposure to cold or dusty and dry weather
  • Repeated respiratory infections
  • Deviated nasal septum
  • Nasal polyps
  • Dust or pollen allergies
  • Staying awake till late in the night and sleeping in the daytime

Types of Sinusitis:

  • Acute sinusitis- usually starts with cold like symptoms such as a runny, stuffy nose and facial pain. It may start suddenly and last 2 to 4 weeks.
  • Subacute sinusitis – usually lasts 4 to 12 weeks.
  • Chronic sinusitis – symptoms last 12 weeks or longer.
  • Recurrent sinusitis – happens several times a year.
  • Pansinusitis – affects all the sinuses in your head

Common symptoms of Sinusitis:

  • Stuffy or blocked nose
  • Thick white, yellow, or green discharge from the nose
  • Headache
  • Pain or pressure in the face worse when a person bends forward
  • Coughing
  • Trouble smelling
  • Ear pressure or fullness
  • Bad breath

Migraine is a headache that can cause severe throbbing pain or a pulsing sensation, usually on one side of the head. It’s often accompanied by nausea, vomiting and extreme sensitive to light and sound. Migraine attacks can last for hours to days, and the pain can be so severe that it interferes with your daily activities. Migraine can be correlated to Ardhavabhedaka in Ayurveda.

Etiological factors such as excessive consumption of dry or unctuous substances, exposure to cold, holding of natural urges, exercises and exhaustion are causes for vata dosha vitiation and frequent intake of food before the digestion of previous meal, intake of heavy to digest food and drinking excess cold water contribute to kapha dosha vitiation and form ama condition. The vata dosha or along with kapha affects the head and produces severe unilateral pain in the neck, eyebrow, temples, ear, eye and forehead.

Symptoms of Migraine:

  • Pain usually on one side of the head, often on both sides
  • Pain that throbs or pulses
  • Sensitive to light, sound and sometimes smell and touch
  • Nausea and vomiting

Pinasa is one of the most important nasal disorder. It can occur independently or as a complication of other disorders. Pinasa is an inflammatory disease of respiratory mucosa accompanied by sneezing, cough, headache, rhinorrhea, itching in throat and eyes. This cascade challenges the management of the disease and ultimately leads to negative impact to quality of life of the patient.

There are two stages of Pinasa.

  1. Ama Pinasa/ Apakva Pinasa

This is the stage of disease in immature / unripe form. It includes the symptoms like heaviness of the head, discharges from the nose, thinning of voice, debility and continuous spitting.

  1. Pakva Pinasa

This is the mature form of the disease. It includes the symptom of nasal passage block with thickened mucous or secretions.
