Hemorrhoids (Piles)

Hemorrhoids are swollen, inflamed or enlarged veins that from inside and the outside of anus and rectum. In Ayurveda piles called as Arshas. It is defined as a disease which tortures patient’s vital force (prana) as enemy. Vata, pitta and kapha doshas disturbed due to improper eating habits and lifestyle pattern. Vitiated pitta dosha cause accumulation of ama or toxic matter in digestion tract and vata vitiation cause obstruction of channels. All these leads to a mass hanging down from the anus.

Hemorrhoids classified as:

  1. Internal hemorrhoids
  2. Primary Degree: May bleed, but not come out of anus
  3. Secondary Degree: Come out of anus when have bowel movement, but go inside own afterwards
  4. Third Degree: Comes out, but only go back when push inside
  5. Fourth Degree: Always partly outside and can’t push them back. Become very painful or swollen if they bleed inside.
  6. External Hemorrhoids: Swelling that develop down and closer to anus.

Causes for Hemorrhoids:

  • Irregular bowel habits
  • Low fiber diet
  • Aging
  • Over weight
  • Hereditary
  • Emotional stress
  • Pregnancy

Signs and Symptoms of Hemorrhoids:

  • Bleeding while go to toilet to pass stool or blood covers the stool
  • Formation of a hard and painful lump near the anus and some of these piles may have coagulated blood as well
  • Extreme pain during bowel movement
  • Red and itchy anal region
  • Fecal incontinence
  • Feeling full even after bowel movement

In the Ayurveda management of the Hemorrhoids uses Bhaishajya chikitsa (herbal medicines) as internal treatments and oil application, herbal bathing, Kshara application, Kshara sutra and Agnikarma use as external treatments according to its type and degree. Avoid from spicy and fast foods, avoid from constipation and drink of more water is also important.

Anal Fistula

Anal fistula is a small tunnel that develops between the end of the bowel and the skin near the opening of the anus, which results in a collection of pus in the nearby tissue. When the pus drains away it can leave a small channel behind.

Causes for Anal Fistula:

  • Previously drained anal abscess
  • Crohn’s diseases or other inflammatory bowel diseases
  • Infections of the anal area
  • Trauma to the anal area
  • Surgery or radiation for treatment of anal cancer


Symptom of Anal Fistula:

  • A red, inflamed area around the tunnel opening
  • An opening on the skin around the anus
  • Oozing of pus, blood or stool from the tunnel opening
  • Pain in the rectum and anus, especially when sitting or passing
  • Fever

Ayurveda treatments are very effective for the anal fistula conditions. Treatment with Ayurveda for fistula without much chance of recurrence. Anal Fissure

This is a small tear in the thin, moist tissue that lines the anus. The fissure can be painful and may bleed.

Causes for Anal fissure:

  • Chronic constipation
  • Prolonged staining
  • Passing hard or large stools during a bowel movement
  • Prolonged diarrhoea
  • Anal sex or anal stretching
  • Insertion of foreign objects into the anus

Internal medicines as well as topical external applications are very effective in the management of anal fissure. Internal medicines are used to recover dosha unbalancing and ease for constipation with having antiseptic healing properties. External treatments like oil application and herbal bathing have a great wound healing and antiseptic effects with reducing of itching and burning sensation.
