Animal bites pose a major public health problem in children and adults in worldwide. The health impacts of animal bites are dependent on the type, health of animal species and health of the bitten person. Numerous animal species have potential to bite humans and among them most important are snake, dogs, cats, monkeys, rats and insects bites. Once a bite has occurred, it is important to lookout for signs and symptoms of infection. Localized redness around wound, warmth around the bite area, red streaks leading away from the bite, a fever, pus, swelling and pain like symptoms can indicate infection in animal bites.

A poison is any substance that is harmful to the body. Poisons can be entering to the body through swallow, inhale, inject and absorb it through the skin.  Poisons can be include prescription or over the counter medicines taken in doses that are too high, overdose of illegal drugs, pesticides, carbon monoxide from gas appliances, indoor or outdoor plants, metals such as lead and mercury and household products.  Poisoning can effects for short term illness to brain damage, coma and death.

In Ayurveda medicine, animal bites and poisoning is mentioned under the Agada Tantra or Visha Chikitsa. It includes the treatments of diseases caused by poisons and toxins such as animal, reptile and insect bites, poisonous minerals, metals and spoilt food and unsuitable food combinations. This is equivalent to toxicology in modern medicine. Visha Chikitsa describes the action of harmful elements on body functions and hoe it can destroy the body tissues. In Ayurveda poisons are categorized under two sections as Mahavisha (highly poison) and Upavisha (moderately poison) basing on their toxicity and potency.  Also it mentioned how to do detoxification from poisoning plants and potentiating the therapeutic efficacy by shodhana and samskara process. Visha leads to vitiation of all the three doshas and breaks the bonding between various dhatus and thereby causes looseness in dhatus resulting in their improper function.

The drugs or diet which is opposite in properties as that of the disease cause visha type (toxins), should be used for its treatments to remove toxic parts from the body tissues with focusing the signs and symptoms of the patient.
